How to Detox Skin From Inside Out
Sometimes also referred to as skin cleansing, a skin detox is something that is done from the inside out, and not from the outside only like regular cleansing would suggest. A successful skin cleanse means that one takes some active measures to promote the excretion of toxins over a stipulated period of time.
The result? Happier, healthier skin that not only looks better, but feels wonderful too. There are various different ways to achieve a potent skin detox, many of which we will explore throughout this article. We were fortunate to speak to a myriad of individuals (from skin care professionals to medical personnel) who have done regular detoxing, and offered us first hand accounts of some of the best ways to go about it. Their accounts are scattered throughout this article, so stay with us!
Detox for Skin
If you’re pondering how to remove toxins from skin naturally, you’re not alone. This is something that everyone would like to get right, particularly for the purpose of balancing the responsibility that weighs on the average lymphatic system.
What’s that? Patricia Heitz from Sage Wellness and Healing (a specialist in facial lymphatic drainage) gave us a more detailed breakdown of this immensely important internal system. “The job of your lymphatic system is to move waste products, toxic chemicals, etc. out of your body. Lymphatic fluid is made up of 95% water. Lymphatic fluid does not have its own pump system like the blood does with the heart. Therefore, lymphatic fluid can build up, and cause swelling.”
Heitz tells us to think of a muddy river with pollution, excess mud, and other waste material moving very slowly because of so much debris in the water. This is what the lymphatic system can look like depending on stress and diet. “We can help this fluid move naturally by drinking more water. When you urinate more, you eliminate more waste. Also, exercising more, but specifically through muscle exercise that contracts the muscle and forces the lymphatic fluid to move through the lymphatic vessels will help.”, says Patricia.
To put it simply, detoxing your skin is vital to its health; especially as we age. Our metabolism slows as we get older, therefore, slowing down this lymphatic waste removal process.
Symptoms of Toxins Leaving The Body
If you’ve ever done any kind of detox, you’ll know that there is nothing pleasant about toxins leaving the body. Adverse symptoms are a sure sign that a detox is working, and that nasty toxins that were deeply embedded within are finally coming to the surface.
Skin breakouts during detox are to be expected. Try to think of it as a last goodbye to some unwanted tenants who you didn’t even know had taken up residency in your body. Some also complain of detox symptoms dizziness, which is also fairly common! Dizziness is natural when the body is in a detoxifying state, because things are moving quickly and balance is trying desperately to restore itself.
Detox for Skin Problems
There are a lot of people who want to detox for skin problems, as this simple process has been known to help everything from acne to premature aging. Detoxing tends to remove a lot from the skin, while putting back even more in terms of nutrients and growth factors.
Skin aging is considered a problem by many who don’t find it their preference (that’s alright!). But how can a detox affect the biological clock of such a major organ? We chatted with Sally Moores, a natural health, wellbeing, and skincare expert, to find out her take on this:
“A diet heavy in sugar will age the skin. This is because when the body has too much sugar to deal with (and carbohydrates turn into sugar in the body), AGE’s are created. AGE’s (advanced glycation end products) stick to the collagen and elastin that form the scaffolding of the skin and make them stiff. Over time these molecules build up and destroy the plumpness and elasticity of the skin and cause wrinkles and sagging.”
Sally tells us that one can easily slow down the aging process by using the correct skincare products and detoxing the skin from the inside out by eating a low carbohydrate diet. There you have it, folks!
Congested Skin Detox
Congested skin is another reason to consider doing a detox from the inside out. Congested skin can manifest physically in a number of ways, and you can do a basic Google search for detox skin rash pictures to see if your symptoms match these to any degree.
Congested skin needs to be looked at from an inward outward perspective, but your skincare routine will also play a major role in the rectification of such a problem. Farhan Advani, marketing director at BuyHerePayHere, shares this sentiment, and gave us a top tip for outward facial care. “Cleanse your face with water at least twice daily using a cleanser that does not contain any harmful ingredients like alcohol, fragrance oil, or petroleum derivatives. Think of it this way – if you would not drink it for breakfast, do not put it on your face!” Wise words Farhan, wise words!
Detox Oily Skin
Oily skin may not be as detrimental as some other physical skin ailments, but that’s not to say it’s not worth treating through detox if results are possible. Oil production in the skin is almost always a direct result of one’s diet, so a detox is really the only natural solution if you want a long term fix, and not just the masking of symptoms.
Farhan also shared this sentiment, and went on to tell us that there are many natural, safe methods to help detox skin from the inside out. “The most important thing is to maintain a diet rich in whole foods, citrus fruits, and vegetables. Here are the top 3 ways to help support your
skin’s ability to stay healthy – chemically or otherwise: cleanse, moisturize, and protect,” said Farhan.
Detox for Acne Prone Skin
Finally, a skin problem that needs little introduction. Acne prone skin is something that we as a society had tried long and hard to cure from the outside. This approach fails us and our youth time and time again, and it’s high time we turn our attention inward and start looking at the root of the issue.
For more on this, we sought the expertise of Amanda Richard, an integrative nutritionist and health coach. “If there is one thing I’ve learned about acne, especially cystic acne, it’s that you MUST heal it from the inside out. No topical treatments will cure conditions like this because it’s your body’s way of communicating with you that there are deeper issues at play.”
Amanda tells us that the skin is like a window into the health of our gut. Skin conditions like acne are often the first signs of underlying gut issues like dysbiosis, SIBO, leaky gut, and/or chronic inflammation. The only way to detox your skin is to start by healing the gut.
“The most common first step is to reduce high inflammatory foods and increase gut nourishing foods. Try limiting things like dairy, gluten, processed oils, sugar, and alcohol. At the same time, focus on adding in more bone broth, whole fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, and lots of water. This will help create a more nourishing environment within the digestive tract that not only helps heal the gut but also improves the detoxification pathways in the body,” says Amanda.
Skin Detox Products
If you’re looking for the next big skin detox diet plan to hit the market, you may be in luck. Detox teas and herbal drinks have been taking this industry by storm, offering some very real benefits to those looking for a daily practice that will get their internal systems filtering like never before.
Before we delve deep into each of these potential benefactors, it’s important that we note that when we refer to drinking more water, teas and detox fluids are included under this umbrella term. Water lies at the center of the detox storm, and will be your most crucial element as you embark on this journey.
To confirm this notion, we got in touch with Roberta Perry of ScrubzBody Skincare. “The number one thing you can do to flush the skin out is drink water. At least 8 glasses a day, and preferably with lemon for the Vitamin C boost. Vitamin C helps build collagen! Adding ginger, turmeric, or drinking green tea as an anti-inflammatory ingredient is another inside-out trick. The less inflamed your entire body is, the less stressed your skin feels.”
Skin Detox Drink
Preparing skin detox drinks is one of the easiest ways to start a skin detox home remedy. These “drinks” are simply potions you’ll prepare with water and herbs, all designed to cleanse your system from the inside out.
As mentioned above, these drinks can be prepared using a range of different ingredients, including things like turmeric and ginger. The ingredients required are not haphazard, but consciously chosen due to their detoxifying properties and natural anti-inflammatory abilities.
Herbs and plants aside, one can also prepare detoxifying drinks by mixing vitamin rich water at home. What is meant by this, is that basic nutrients such as vitamin C or vitamin D3 can be added to your daily intake in order to level up the detoxifying properties of the drink. We were grateful to speak with Judson Somerville (MD), who brought the importance of vitamin D3 to our attention. “By far the best detox of skin is optimal blood plasma levels of vitamin D3. I have seen it reverse skin cancer in myself and several others. It makes it highly unlikely you receive a sunburn and speeds the repair of scars and aging marks.”
Skin Detox Tea
If you look up how to detox your skin in a week, you’ll find an abundance of tea brands that claim rapid, effective internal detox within as little as seven days. While the timeframe cannot be guaranteed, detoxing through tea is certainly a highly effective means of delivering helpful nutrients into the system for the purpose of filtration.
The lymphatic system is notoriously responsive to speciality teas, which makes these one of the most accessible and affordable avenues into proper lymphatic drainage. Teas are a great way to detox at home, as you need only brew them minutes for consuming, which is a lot less time consuming than the more complex drinks mentioned above.
Detox Skinny Herb Tea
Also known as a teatox, the Detox Skinny Herb Tea is available online and has a massive following of very satisfied customers worldwide. The detox pack consists of two components; a morning start and a bedtime cleanse.
By simply following their instructions, one can reap the benefits of an internal shift in just a matter of days. What’s great about this particular tea, is that it targets the liver and colon, as well as the skin in general.
A lot of people report losing those extra kilos naturally and in a healthy manner while using this tea. While we can’t speak to this, we can attest to the fact that each bag contains a well thought-out mix of herbs that are all designed to detoxify.
Yogi Skin Detox Tea
If you’re in the market for a potential 5-day skin detox, then the Yogi Skin Detox Tea is a brand you’ll want to take a closer look at. Yogi has been a market-leading name for quite some time, known for their Ayurvedic brews, detoxifying blends and calming concoctions. They have a tea for everything, basically, and their detox teas fly off the shelves like you can’t believe.
Yogi Skin Detox Tea Does it Work
Yogi’s popularity didn’t grow overnight, and they certainly are nothing close to a one hit wonder. There is a good reason why they are still in business, and pioneering the movement toward vaster internal detox at that.
Their feedback speaks for itself, and you’ll rarely find less than 5 star ratings across the thousands of websites that sell their products. The teas work, if you stick to their recommended dosages and times of use.
Yogi Skin Detox Tea Side Effects
Firstly, it’s important to note that any side effects associated with Yogi’s detox tea are not indicative of Yogi itself, but rather of detox teas in general. The following side effects are possible through the use of any potent teatox blend, not just a singled out brand.
When you consume an unusually large amount of herbs through tea drinking, there is almost always the risk of some not-so-nice responses as they do their thing on the inside of the body. Diarrhea is a common one, with gas, bloating, nausea and cramps all following suit.
There is the possibility of electrolyte imbalance, as well as dehydration, so it is important to still be hydrating with normal water even when committing to a teatox.
Kidney issues are a risk with any tea-based detox, but these are rare and easily manageable.
Yogi Skin Detox Tea Reviews
As with any natural product, the reviews are where you’ll get the most accurate feel for what to expect from a particular brand. Yogi’s reviews, for the most part, are quite positive and successful. Of course there are a few less than pleasing accounts from people who didn’t have such great experiences, however it is also important to note that there are certain individuals who are not good candidates for a teatox, so negative feedback is somewhat expected in certain instances.
Detox teas, for example, can interact negatively with certain pharmaceutical drugs that a person may be on for other health ailments. They’ll quite literally detox the medicines out of the body, which can give the effect of existing health problems actually getting worse. They aren’t, the teas are just cleaning out your system and thus your body isn’t registering the medications or their benefits.
Skinny Fit Detox Tea
One of the biggest selling points of Skinny Fit teas is that they are entirely laxative free. This is not something that a lot of detox tea companies can claim, as many include harmful laxatives in their blends in order to give the illusion of the body “expelling toxins”.
More than this, Skinny Fit’s teas are actually very energizing, as far as detox teas go. Many of these teas have the opposite effect on the system, and can make one lethargic, dizzy or even drowsy due to the amount of toxins being moved by the minute. This blend takes a different approach, and keeps the lymph active and energized naturally.
Skinny Fit Detox Tea Recipes
People around the world love to share their takes on brewing Skinny Fit. The teas are as effective cold as they are hot, which means there is an entire world of recipes that were opened up by simply cooling your brew overnight.
Iced teas can have a myriad of fruits and additional herbs added to them for increased effect and enjoyment. Adding blueberries, organic slices, fresh ginger and any other available fruits is a great way to level up your teatox, especially if you’re attempting one in the summer months!
Skinny Fit Detox Tea Ingredients
So what’s in this tea, anyway? It’s quite a blend, but we’re happy to list all of the added ingredients for curious customers. Ready?
Oolong tea, hibiscus, nettle leaf, dandelion, apple, goji berry, lemongrass, Yerba mate, milk thistle, guarana, peach, strawberry, passion fruit, ginseng, matcha, stevia and citric acid.
Skin Detox Bath
While you’re detoxing your skin from the inside out using teas and potions that you brew hot and fresh, one can also add a helpful detox bath regime into the mix, giving the skin a much needed point of extortion during the process.
You see, when toxins are trying to leave the skin, they need to be able to move through the pores. This isn’t always the easiest process, which is why breakouts during detox are so common. Skin that is congested is not ideal territory for a toxin purge.
When we soak our skin, however, we invite the pores to open up, making way for whatever wants to come out to do so without much resistance. A detox bath generally involves a herbal bath salt mix, or natural bubbles, that works directly on the skin to create the ideal environment for detoxification.
Jeff Hong is a registered dietitian and nutritionist and a big fan of the detox bath. “A relaxing detox bath can also prove to be very beneficial for one’s skin. It helps detoxify the skin and reduce muscle tension. It also results in better circulation of blood which ensures that the skin is getting enough blood for its requirements. Epsom salt, apple cider vinegar, sea salt and many more natural products can be added in the bath for extra benefits.”
Detox Water for Skin
As mentioned, water is the most crucial element for anyone who is embarking on a skin detox journey. Hydration is key, and Michelle Bareid, founder of Hair Extensions Advisor, shares this sentiment. “I recommend replacing your cocktails and sodas with water-based liquids such as green tea and lemon water. Both options work like magic when it comes to detoxing from the inside out. When you’re done properly hydrating, get up and get moving. Regular exercise is also key for detoxing from the inside out!”
While drinking 8 or more glasses of water a day is a good start for anyone looking for an effective detox, amplifying water’s effect using lemon, ginger, turmeric, herbs and other fruits will only work to offer more effective results in a shorter period of time.
Skin Detox Mask
Once your body is in a detox state, it can be helpful to use other products to accelerate the purging process. Skin detox masks are face masks that are designed to control the rate of sebum production on the face, so that the pores are left nice and empty to allow for breakout-free toxin purge.
Skin detox masks are wonderful assets, even for people who are not attempting a detox from the inside out. One can use them every few weeks to simply keep the quality of the skin under control, or to prevent breakouts around the time of menstruation.
Jeff Hong, who we heard from earlier, is an advocate for detox masks. “Mud Mask is a traditional method of detoxifying the skin. Applying this mask helps pull impurities and waste materials out of your skin. It unclogs clogged pores and rejuvenates the look of dull skin!”, he told us.
Jeff added an important point: exfoliating the skin is equally as important! “Where the notion is that scrubbing and exfoliating the skin harms the skin, it is actually the reverse of what happens. Exfoliating at least two days in a week helps to detoxify the skin. Homemade scrubs like honey & oatmeal, sugar & lemon or any other ayurvedic scrub is a good option for the skin.”
How to Detox Skin Naturally
So this begs the question: how to remove toxins from skin… naturally! We’ve discussed how to detoxify skin at length, but to answer this burning question, one needs to speak with the professionals.
First, we spoke with Sarah Anderson from Peak Integrative Wellness. She made it clear that skin health starts on the inside, as many skin conditions are outward manifestations of inner problems. Diet, stress, gut health, and hormone regulation all play a key role in the overall health of your body and your skin.
Her list of ways to naturally detox the skin consists of the following:
- Stay hydrated! Limit alcohol and drink plenty of water. Water helps detox your body and keep your skin supple
- Eat a diet rich in detoxifying foods for skin, including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Include foods such as spinach, peppers, broccoli, sesame seeds, blueberries, avocado, nuts, fatty fish
- Drink bone broth – it’s loaded with collagen, which is anti-aging and helps keep the skin firm
- Drink green tea – helps stimulate circulation and detoxify the body
- Get your beauty sleep – sleep is the body’s repair time and this includes the skin
- Cut back on sugar – sugar causes hormone dysregulation which can lead to breakouts. Sugar can also lead to glycation, a process that causes damage to collagen and elastin in the skin
Best Skin Detox
When it comes to toxins excreted through skin, some means are better than others. It’s difficult to say what the overall best detox is as a blanket treatment for all individuals. Everyone’s internal systems are in varied states, and toxins settle in different parts of the internal sphere.
For one, a teatox could be the best treatment, because their build up of toxins happens to be in an organ structure where tea can actually provide results (colon, liver, lymph etc). However, someone who is struggling with toxic overload in a more difficult-to-reach area, such as the pancreas, may not see the same results from the same routine.
That said, we’ll always offer recommendations when they’re asked for. Here are our picks for the top detox water and top detox face mask for optimal results:
Best Detox Water for Skin
In and amongst all of the detox hype, there is one detox water recipe that has remained the OG through thick and thin. That mix is simply mineral water mixed with the juice of one whole lemon, some fresh mint leaves, and one teaspoon of honey.
Together, this fresh trio works with the body’s most complex internal systems to rapidly purge them of even the most resistant toxins. Try to drink a glass of this mix at least thrice a day for optimal results.
Since this blend contains honey, it is best to mix it with somewhat warm water, so that the honey has an opportunity to dissolve into the liquid. From there, simply leave the mixture in the fridge for about 3 hours and then it will be ready to enjoy.
Best Detoxifying Face Mask
Before we share our pick for the best detox face mask, we’d be remiss not to share a few top detox tips from an industry expert. David Gray is the owner of Talking Tan in Las Vegas, and he learned a lot whilst studying dermatology. “Detoxing stimulates a healthier environment for your skin, providing numerous benefits such as boosting cell metabolism, increasing cell turnover, improving the skin barrier, as well as fostering elastin and collagen development – all very important things.”
He suggests that the best ways we can detox from the inside out are by drinking enough water and green tea since green tea can improve elasticity while also protecting our skin from sun damage. More than this, applying a reputable detox face mask every so often can do wonders for sun damaged facial skin.
If we had to pick just one mask to recommend for the job, it would have to be the 3-in-1 Detox Mud Mask from Honest Beauty. Made with activated charcoal and white bentonite, this mask is a force against oily pores and impurities. It’s affordable, and easy enough to use whenever your skin is “acting up”.
Skinny Fit Detox Tea Where to Buy
Unlike Yogi teas, Skinny Fit’s brand is unusually difficult to get a hold of if you don’t know where to look. Skinny Fit is a popular brand, and buying online directly from their website is always an option. They offer worldwide shipping, but not everyone is as keen to wait weeks or months for a delivery of tea to arrive.
Getting it locally is always preferable. Here’s what you need to know when it comes to tracking down this dynamic brand.
Skinny Fit Detox Tea at Walmart
Walmart have been stockist of the Skinny Fit range for quite some time. In addition to in-store, you can easily purchase from their online platform for delivery just about anywhere. In some cases, ordering from Walmart actually gets you cheaper and faster delivery that ordering from the brand directly, but this is very much location specific.
We’ve found that the Skinny Fit range is almost always present in the bigger Walmarts, and a little harder to find in the smaller stores.
While in Walmart, it’s not a bad idea to hit the grocery aisles for some suitable detox foods, too.
Skinny Fit Detox Tea at Target
Target is another competitive retailer who has taken on the Skinny Fit tea brand for all their customers seeking this kind of treatment. Again, their online store offers fast and affordable shipping, which can sometimes be more efficient than from the site directly.
If your neighborhood Target is yet to stock any kind of detox teas, then simply put in a formal request with the management and ask that they start stocking some options.
Skinny Fit Detox Tea on Amazon
When all is lost, or if there are simply no Walmarts or Targets near you, then you can always head over to Amazon for your fix of Skinny Fit. Here you’ll find a range of retailers all looking to sell their bulk stock, and you can get some great deals (especially if you yourself buy in bulk).
Always remember to make use of Amazon’s public rating and feedback service before committing to buy. This is how one can tell fake products from the real thing (unfortunately, it happens!).
