Best 11 Natural Mouthwash (Updated 2024)

  • Post category:Skincare

Before you make ‘that face’ at the thought of a natural mouthwash, let us explain why we believe this may be one of the most important things to come out of oral hygiene yet. These brands are on to something great, and we’re thoroughly enjoying this health evolution.

In this article we discuss the following:

Do Natural Mouthwashes Work?

A natural antibacterial mouthwash is exactly as described: a mouthwash made entirely of natural ingredients that works to fight bad breath, as well as a number of other oral conditions.

This begs the question, do natural mouthwashes actually work? Surprisingly yes, and clean self-care fiends aren’t the only ones who think so.

Renee Belz is a certified nutritional consultant, and has been recommending natural mouthwash to her patients for over 30 years! Why has she been so inclined? ”First of all, many mouthwash products on the market contain toxic ingredients, including fluoride and a high alcohol content. These harsh products not only kill the bad bacteria in the mouth, but the healthy good bacteria in the mouth. We need a healthy balanced oral microbiome, not one where all of the bacteria have been eliminated.” says Belz.

Mouthwash Natural Ingredients

An organic natural mouthwash will be free from these harmful agents that disrupt the bacteria of the mouth. Those unfavorable ingredients don’t end at fluoride and alcohol.

Belz goes on to explain why natural mouthwash should be your product of choice, citing the alternative ingredients that are less harsh on the body. “Natural mouthwashes can provide more gentle oral hygiene care through the use of ingredients such as xylitol and tea tree oil.”

Benefits of Natural Mouthwash

The benefits of using natural mouth cleansers seem to be accumulating as the years go by. There are undeniably numerous correlations between toxins and the ways they affect the natural bacterial balance of the mouth, but what else can one get out of using natural mouthwash?

Ryan Smith, owner of a prominent organic pest control business, spends a lot of time researching chemicals to discern their suitability for human exposure. According to him, “Natural mouthwashes also contain additives and thus don’t dry my mouth.” He notes that natural mouthwashes are of great benefit to anyone who has a sensitive mouth and/or teeth.

Natural Mouthwash for Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a common condition that is caused by poor oral hygiene practices. It is usually identifiable by inflamed, swollen gums that bleed easily.

To treat mild to moderate gingivitis, most dentists will recommend a structured brushing routine (twice daily), as well as regular flossing (at least once a day). Natural mouthwash products are showing more and more effect in the treatment of gingivitis, due to their ability to seep deep into the bed of the gums and pull out toxins.

One of the best natural mouthwash regimes for gingivitis is oil pulling (natural mouthwash coconut oil). Health Coach & Performance Researcher, Nick Urban, swears by this practice, and encourages anyone struggling with their oral health to look no further than their household pantry. “Using coconut oil as a mouth rinse has been used by Ayurvedic health practitioners for at least 5,000+ years. Recent research on oil pulling has shown that it:

* Slows tooth decay

* Whitens teeth

* Kills harmful bacteria

* Removes stains

* Freshens breath

* Improves digestion

  • Strengthens the gums and jaw

Nick goes on to site a scientific study from 2016, in which oil pulling (and other natural mouthwashes) were concluded to be more effective than store-bought, chemical based alternatives.

Natural Mouthwash for Gums

You don’t have to wait for symptoms of gingivitis to set in before you start taking better care of your gums. Like teeth, gums need regular tending to and a good, deep clean every few days, in order to reduce risk of infection.

A natural fluoride mouthwash could be a great asset to add to your oral-care routine, if your gums are something you’ve been wanting to give more care to for quite some time. As we know, chemical based mouthwashes are not ideal for this task, as they strip away the microbiome (good bacteria) from the gum surfaces, which can cause harm in the long run.

Natural Mouthwash for Periodontal Disease

Periodontitis is another common, but easily preventable, oral condition. It’s similar to gingivitis in that the gums will swell, and feel tender to the touch, however this condition almost always results in the loss of teeth, as well as sever damage to surrounding jaw bones.

Health nuts recommend a strict ritual involving natural mouthwash tablets, in order to try and correct this unfavorable condition. Mouthwash tablets are not swallowed like medicine, but rather are added to water where they will dissolve and produce a potent natural solution that one can then use to rinse the mouth.

Natural Mouthwash for Bad Breath

A lot of people are skeptical about switching to a natural mouthwash, believing that they need the chemical-based alternatives if they have any hope of warding off bad breath. This is largely untrue, and consumers would be surprised to find that the ingredients in chemical products that correct foul breath are almost always the natural components (the oils, plant extracts, etc) and not the alcohols.

Natural Mouthwash for Thrush

Oral thrush, also called candidiasis, is the experience of producing candida on the inner lining of the mouth. Candida is a natural organism that is widely present throughout the human body, however when it overgrows it can be extremely unpleasant.

Since candida is a fungus, you’re either feeding it, or you’re starving it. When mouth microbiome gets thrown out of balance due to chemical-based mouthwashes, candida organisms start feasting on whatever they can grab hold of in the mouth. This leads to the overgrowth, and the thrush condition.

By using a natural mouthwash, your mouth microbiome stay in perfect balance, and there is no opportunity for the candida organisms to start their feast. Once you realize that oral health is, quite literally, all about balance, you’re wellness journey will take on a whole new understanding.

Natural Mouthwash for Sensitive Teeth

Earlier, organic fiend Ryan Smith states that natural mouthwashes should be the go-to for anyone with sensitive mouths/teeth. There is nothing worse for a mouth ecosystem than harsh toxins; sensitivity requires gentleness, it’s really that simple.

At this point in the wellness revolution, no one with sensitive teeth, gums, palates or even skin should be using toxic products that are based in alcohol. Alcohols are extremely acidic, and pose a one way ticket to increased sensitivity over time. Give your cells a break and chance to regenerate — guaranteed you won’t be complaining about sensitivity in 5 years time!

Natural Mouthwash for Dry Mouth

Chemical, store-bought mouthwashes are also a one way ticket to dry mouth syndrome. This is inevitable, and something almost everyone who uses these products will experience if they start paying attention to how they feel after use.

The only solution for eradicating dry mouth? Switch to a natural mouthwash today. According to Nicole Graham, a lifestyle and relationship coach, “Saliva is what holds the mouth’s pH balanced; a dry mouth implies fewer saliva development, which may contribute to the development of bad bacteria and bad breath. If you’re used to using mouthwash, try to switch to natural alternatives as much as possible.”

Natural Mouthwash for Mouth Sores

Looking for a natural mouthwash for gum disease is usually a priority for those whose oral condition has resulted in mouth sores. This is an alarming, and eye opening experience for any individual, and will result in the reassessment of all hygiene rituals to date.

Again, a natural mouthwash will give the mouth a break from the constant exposure to acidic chemicals and toxins, so that things like sores have the time and space that they need to heal. No wound can heal itself when being drowned in thoughtless chemicals every 24 hours. Balance, balance, balance!

Individuals struggling with dry mouth need to use a mouthwash that is entirely free from alcohol, and is as alkaline based as possible. For this we recommend their fluoride free variant, however both of their natural products are suitable for remedying this issue. Natural Mouthwash Brands

There are always going to be natural brands who make it, and those who simply never quite get off the ground. There are two that comes up time and time again through health experts and wellness fiends worldwide, and we’d like to tell you a bit more about them:

Nature’s Answer Periobrite Natural Mouthwash

Nature's Answer Periobrite Natural Mouthwash

Nature’s Answer is an all natural mouthwash, free from alcohol and fluoride and made with the intention of promoting periodontal health. What makes this product unique is that is one of the most complex botanical formulas on the market, and the only brand to be executing this formula to this degree.

It’s made through the process of cold extraction, which allows the raw ingredients and minerals to stay in tact without being exposed to any heat.

Periogen Box Set

Periogen Box Set

The Periogen box set is something that gets recommended by health care providers worldwide. It contains three elements that work together to produce one effective natural mouth rinse, filled with active ingredients that also work to reduce buildup on teeth.

Rita Tennyson from Pulp PR is an advocate for this particular product. “You may be surprised to hear this, but Periogen is the FIRST and ONLY product to be clinically proven around the world to reduce dental tartar buildup, the major cause of gum disease.”

Tennyson goes on to explain that a small 3 oz bottle of concentrate can make nearly 3 gallons of this particular rinse, making it the least expensive rinse option by far. According to her, 90% of bottled rinses are just water!

How to Make Natural Mouthwash at Home

You don’t need to look to any known brands to get you onto this mouthwash trend. Natural mouthwash DIY is a budding discussion these days, and you’ll likely be pleasantly surprised by how many natural ingredients you already have in your kitchen that can do the trick!

Natural homemade mouthwash takes just a few minutes to prepare, if you know what you’re doing. Nicole Graham, who we heard from earlier, has a preferred natural mouthwash recipe that she shares freely with clients who are interested:

Peppermint and Tea Tree Oil Mouthwash

  1. Add one cup of distilled water, two tablespoons of baking soda, eight or nine peppermint leaves, and two drops of tea tree oil to a mason jar.
  1. Combine all of the ingredients in a large mixing cup.
  1. Before each use, give the jar a good shake to dislodge some baking soda that has settled to the bottom. When gargling, avoid swallowing.

After making natural mouthwash once or twice, it’s likely you’ll start to get experimental with your chosen ingredients. There are no right or wrong ways to go about this, but baking soda is a crucial element for potency, such as in homemade mouthwash hydrogen peroxide baking soda recipes.

Where to Buy Natural Mouthwash

By now, natural mouthwash is creeping its way onto the shelves of drugstores and department stores worldwide. Because they are not yet mainstream, you may have to do some digging before you’re able to find their location in-store, or simply ask for assistance from the staff as you walk in.

If this sounds daunting, we highly recommend doing all your clean beauty and wellness shopping online. Firstly, you’ll have access to a myriad of brands that you wouldn’t usually be able to choose from in a store-setting, and secondly, the product will be delivered straight to your door without you having to lift a finger.

Natural Mouthwash at Walmart

Walmart is a wonderful place to go for a wide variety and in-store shopping experience. The chain has been a consistent supporter of clean(er) beauty trends since they started to become more mainstream, so you’ll be able to find at least a handful of natural mouthwash brands upon visiting.

If none of them tickle your fancy, you’ll also be able to walk yourself over to the grocery isle and purchase everything you need to DIY mouthwash at home instead!

Natural Mouthwash on Amazon

Amazon is where you can turn to for all of the dominant natural mouthwash brands on the market. What’s great about using an e-commerce platform for clean beauty and wellness shopping, is that there is a transparent public review system where you can read past experiences and opinions of customers for every product.

This is a quick and easy way of vetting the average products from the great ones. Consumers tend to go into detail when explaining the pros and cons of the products they have invested in.
